ARTEL is a group of professional artists who collaborate to exhibit their work whilst establishing a dynamic community. Working in the South Downs area, each artist has developed a unique and informed practice. The artwork from this covers a rich and diverse range of subjects and media shared through an annual show in Chichester at the Oxmarket Contemporary gallery. The next show is 13-25 October 2026.

Title “Mutual thirst”

The notion that there is no true space devoid of atoms and energy interests me. It is possible that, as human animals, our five senses have evolved to respond to these merely to enable us to survive long enough to continue our species.

For example, our tool of visual perception - the eyeball - with sensitive rods and cones on the retina, is only stimulated by light and colour. However, each living entity translates and identifies its response by referencing personal stored memory.
While different species have common experience, no two lives are identical. So, like ‘truth’, perception is a unique experience. We call this reality but there may be many other realities unknown to us that human equipment is unable, or has no need to, tap into.
Yet, imagination continually urges consciousness to reach out and try.

If the Big Bang theory is correct, then everything was originally connected and if Entanglement Theory is correct, we and our universe are interconnected, as many faiths believe, within the ‘Spirit’.
The historic gap between spirituality and science will, hopefully, be superseded by a gradual fusion and their common ‘magic’ enable, by communication, our inner and outer worlds to harmonise across The Space Between.
