Sue England is a painter and printmaker working across diverse subjects and approaches. After a working life as a teacher and graphic designer, she now enjoys the physicality of materials and the opportunity to explore methods and ideas.

For this exhibition she was inspired by l7th century Dutch, mostly female artists, like Rachel Ruysch and Clara Peeters who painted intricate floral arrangements.  Modern day painters like Flora Yukhnovich and the flesh tones of Jenny Saville also were an influence.  Sue then concentrated on roses, as a symbol of beauty and transience. The passage of time was the driving force and the unexpected beauty in something that is, essentially, dyeing.

The ideas also led to explorations using different media and surfaces and working towards a 21st century take on 17th century ideas about life and mortality.

Sue has exhibited widely and reached the final of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year. In 2023 she was an Artist in Residence at Denmans Garden, Fontwell  which resulted in her one woman show in Denmans Gallery space.
