ARTEL is a group of professional artists who collaborate to exhibit their work whilst establishing a dynamic community. Working in the South Downs area, each artist has developed a unique and informed practice. The artwork from this covers a rich and diverse range of subjects and media shared through an annual show in Chichester at the Oxmarket Contemporary gallery. The next show is 13-25 October 2026.

Title “Through The Tree”

For the exhibition ‘The Space Between’ immediately inspired me, where shapes and marks between the branches are as important as the tree itself.  The gestural marks are both abstract, suggesting movement, weather, wind, sky and grass. Solid and space are equally important. ‘Through The Tree’ triptych was inspired by a previous plein air session in Bishops Palace Gardens.

The work is intentionally both abstract and figurative and the viewer’s interpretation is important.  I wanted to show the feeling of movement as if you could turn around and the space between branches has changed.

Lorraine Molins is an abstract painter, who studied at Chelsea School of Art and Goldsmiths College, University of London. She received an Arts Council Award, was one of the original Wapping Artists, and has also exhibited widely in London, Paris and Australia with several paintings in private collections. Having moved from London to Chichester in 2022, my work has been inspired by the space, sky, buildings & colours of the Sussex landscape, with scale and atmosphere giving the feeling of being small against a sea of colour.

Besides working on individual pieces, I have a passion for  working on diptychs & triptychs, which reflect how we see – our eyes move from one to the other as if looking at a landscape.
