Serpentine stone carving
Terry Merritt is a Chichester-based sculptor who blends traditional craftsmanship with modern abstraction, hand-carving expressive works from stone and wood. A Fine Art graduate from the University of Chichester, Merritt utilises hand tools alongside power tools to sculpt diverse materials, including vibrant Zimbabwean serpentine.
His artistic inspiration is rooted deeply in the human form, focusing on anatomy, gesture, and movement. By masterfully manipulating curves, lines, and negative space, he pushes figurative forms into abstraction while maintaining a powerful sense of fluid vitality. Beyond static pieces, Merritt creates contemporary kinetic sculptures engineered some rotating dynamically on their bases.
His distinct style has earned widespread international acclaim. Following a major sale at the 2023 London Art Biennale, Merritt exhibited at the Chianciano Art Biennale 2024 in Tuscany. There, his sculpture UNITY won the "Sculpture Special Mention Award," cementing his profile as a compelling voice in modern British sculpture.
