When I am walking on the South Downs, I take photographs of a place recorded by the camera. I choose what to frame and what to leave unseen.
Painting allows me the freedom, not to reproduce what is in front of me, but to translate the experience of ‘being’ into colour, gesture, texture and form. The abstract becomes a space where reality is felt, where memory, emotion and perception can overlap.
I am interested in this shifting ground between representation and imagination, where the certainty of the photographic image begins to dissolve and the ambiguity of painting begins to reveal another kind of truth.
