ARTEL is a group of professional artists who collaborate to exhibit their work whilst establishing a dynamic community. Working in the South Downs area, each artist has developed a unique and informed practice. The artwork from this covers a rich and diverse range of subjects and media shared through an annual show in Chichester at the Oxmarket Contemporary gallery. The next show is 13-25 October 2026.

Title: “Right Place, Wrong Time”

Sue England is a painter and printmaker working across diverse subjects and approaches. After a working life as a teacher and graphic designer, she now enjoys the physicality of materials and the opportunity to explore methods and ideas.

For this exhibition she has developed ideas based on close observation of windows. Using drawings, prints, photographs and paintings, Sue has explored the spaces between what may be ‘through’ and what may be ‘behind’. She has enjoyed the ambiguity of where the observer may be within those spaces. The concept of time and the spaces it creates, also crept into the mix.

The ideas also led to an exploration of the spaces between the methodology of how the paint might be applied and the pushing of representational images, towards an abstract resolution.
Sue has exhibited widely and has reached the final of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year. In 2023 she was an Artist in
Residence at Denmans Garden, Fontwell. Working throughout the year, the results were exhibited in a one woman show in Denmans Gallery space.
